How to buy a printer?

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:12

A printer is one of the most used and most important parts of your computer system, so it pays to get the right one. Here are some pointers on how to do just that.

Sony introduces A560 and A580 DSLRs with HD video shooting

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:10

Sony is increasing the size of its Alpha DSLR line with new entrants, the A560 and A580. It appears it doesn’t matter which one you get, you’ll still be getting a pretty nice system.

App Store active devlopers

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:09

There lots of folks who believe that sooner or later developers will flock to Android because that’s where the majority of users are. However, for the time being at least, devs are going to follow the money and that means writing for the iPhone and iPad.

Crackly Xbox 360 headset issue

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:08

Its no secret that the headset sound quality on the Xbox 360 is terrible with frequent crackling.

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:06

Build Your Own PC?

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:05

Everyone knows that all the parts are readily available to bolt together your own PC. Although it can be fun, is there any real reason to put together your own PC? If you think you might want to build your.

Indoor Faucet Hose Connector

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:03

Some of you might see this handy adapter that lets you connect a garden hose to your indoor faucets as an easy to way to fill an aquarium, a waterbed or even water plants out on the balcony. But I’ve got grander plans for this amazing innovention! Once all of my appliances are unplugged (or at least the ones that are easy to reach) this thing will make my bi-annual cleaning a breeze. Now I’m probably going to need to install a drain in the floor in each room first, which is probably going to upset my neighbors living below me, but I think I can convince them it’s a worthwhile misadventure. Just $9.99 to turn cleaning day into 10 minutes of productive fun!

WaveBox – Because Every Camper Needs A Microwave

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:02

When I think of camping, I imagine pitching a tent somewhere in the middle of nowhere and cooking food over an open fire. Of course, some people have a vastly different idea about camping. I’m talking about the people who pull up in a Winnebago with a stocked fridge, and hoist an antennae so that they can catch the race later. If your idea is somewhere in-between these, then you might be interested in the WaveBox.

Rather than relying on a campfire to heat your meals, the WaveBox allows you to nuke your food, just like you would back home. This “portable” microwave is going to require you to be near an outlet, or at the very least, your car. Most people will opt for the latter, in which case you’ll probably want to hook it directly to your car’s battery for maximum power. At just over $200, this microwave will either make you the envy of your camping buddies, or will get you kicked out of the tent.

Asus U3S6 USB 3.0 / SATA 6 Hybrid Card

2010, szeptember 1 - 11:00

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a brand new motherboard with integrated USB 3.0 ports; yet, many want to take advantage of the theoretical tenfold increase in speed the new copper interface has to offer. For this burgeoning market many manufacturers have started to offer small add-on cards which can upgrade an existing rig to USB 3.0.

Sadly, not all of these add-on cards are created equal as there seems to be two separate and distinct types: PCI Express x1 and PCI Express x4. The latter seem to be the better choice if the ASUS U3S6 is any indication. This particular board packs in not only two USB 3.0 ports, but also a pair of SATA 6GB/s ports. It’s a killer combination with one caveat – the U3S6 isn’t an optimal solution unless your existing motherboard is on the extremely short ASUS approved motherboard list. If you disable the SATA 6, the USB 3.0 ports will most definitely work, and you can expect speed up to 245MB/s with a USB 3.0 SSD. For under $30, it’s a price that is hard to beat.

Little Xbox 360 To Your PS3

2010, szeptember 1 - 10:57

If the ‘barely changed in the past 100 years’ styling of the Sony dualshock controller for the PS3 isn’t doing it for you, and you’ve been enviously eyeing your friend’s Xbox 360 controllers, Nyko’s Raven will give you the best of both worlds. While Nyko might claim the Raven has a “totally unique ergonomic design built from the ground up…” I’m thinking it looks strongly influenced by the 360’s controllers, including the offset analog control sticks which sees the left one sitting higher than the right, a configuration many gamers prefer for FPS titles.

The Raven is also covered in a soft rubbery finish that’s comfortable to hold and prevents the controller from easily slipping out of your hands. It connects to the PS3 via a USB dongle with a range of about 25 feet, and the built-in lithium-ion battery is good for about 25 hours of play and uses a miniUSB port for recharging. And best of all the Raven’s got an MSRP of just $34.99.

Heated Dining Room Table

2010, szeptember 1 - 10:55

This particular table from Hidakagu which features a 360 watt infrared heater underneath that’s specifically designed to warm a diner’s legs and lower torso, not the food on the table. According to InventorSpot, the table was inspired by traditional Japanese ‘kotatsu’ which is a low table/blanket/heater combination that isn’t designed for dining. So this table takes that concept and makes it usable for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Replacing This Paper Alarm Clock

2010, szeptember 1 - 10:17

Either I’m not replacing my alarm clock often enough, or designers Joon&Jung are being a little over-paranoid about just how many of them are ending up in landfills. Their Paper Alarm Clock was created with the idea that the user could easily replace it by ditching or recycling the outer housing which itself is made of molded, recycled paper. There’s still the inside electronic bits that make the alarm do its thing, but they encourage users to mail those back to them where they’ll be placed inside a fresh housing and sent off to the next user. Perfect for the eco-warrior still stuck in a 9 to 5 job but potentially catastrophic for those who have a tendency of spilling the glass of water they keep on their night stand.

Graphing Calculator ‘Tonka-Tough’ With Custom Milled Aluminum Housing

2010, szeptember 1 - 10:15

You dropped your expensive graphing calculator on the floor? Howard C. from University of Iowa industrial engineering has the solution, which will cost you $50. And even though the calculator’s new housing might be a bit bulkier and heavier than the original, rest assured the next time it’s knocked to the floor the only think breaking will be your toe.

Drupal goes Collegiate

2010, augusztus 31 - 15:58

I was pleased to learn that North Central College in Naperville, Illinois is offering Drupal training courses. To be fair, these are "Community Education" classes (i.e., not part of a degree program), but I think it's great to see Drupal taught at the collegiate level.

Our new Drupal Code of Conduct

2010, augusztus 30 - 19:49

As our community grows, it is imperative that we preserve the things that got us here; namely, keeping Drupal a fun, welcoming, challenging, and fair place to play. The new Drupal Code of Conduct (DCOC) states our shared ideals with respect to conduct. Think of this as coding standards for people. It is an expression of our ideals, not a rulebook. It is a way to communicate our existing values to the entire community.

Our friends at Ubuntu have blazed a brilliant trail in this area. They use Drupal as their CMS, and in turn we have embraced their Code of Conduct. This code of conduct is essentially identical to that used by Ubuntu, except that the name of the project has been changed, and the conflict resolution process has been removed since we don't have one.

The DCOC has been under discussion for several months on groups.drupal.org and discussed further at Drupalcon Conpenhagen. Folks who are interested in talking more about the DCOC should do so in the Drupal.org Policies group.

The short version:

  1. Be considerate
  2. Be respectful
  3. When we disagree, we consult others.
  4. When we are unsure, we ask for help.
  5. Step down considerately.
