Hearst has incubated a startup to prove that multichannel publishing can be both cost-effective and profitable.

LMK, which stands for "Let Me Know" is "a startup within a large enterprise," says Christina Bender, senior director of product and project management at LMK.com. The division is fast, nimble, and taking a unique approach to the app environment. Instead of trying to figure out how to make apps for Hearst's brands, the group has figured out how to develop apps in a scalable and cost-effective manner.

The company has developed a means of creating iPhone/iPad apps, Android apps and Facebook apps via its content management system, Drupal. Bender described how one LMK team member, using a collection of RSS feeds, could create an LMK app on all three environments in under an hour. With apps for Alex Rodriguez and Lady Gaga, LMK needs to be able to create apps quickly and easily to execute their "long tail" app strategy. These apps are priced at $0.99 to $1.99 and are very niche. So, the time and financial investment need to be kept low.

New home sales exceeded gloomy forecasts in June, rebounding from a record low in May. Ever since the end of the homebuyers tax credit, new home sales have gone down a lot which makes June still the second lowest on record. Some believe the worst of the post-tax-credit slump is over. Many believe the high U.S. unemployment rate and foreclosures make the optimistic news look like nothing.

The Commerce Department said on Monday that new home sales jumped 23.6 percent to a 330,000 unit annual rate from a downwardly revised 267,000 units in May. CNBC points out that new home sales in June was nevertheless the second lowest since 1963 when records started being kept. The increase, nevertheless, was the largest since 1980 which offset the historic 36.7 percent decline that was in May. Even with this great increase, it is expected the U.S. housing market will continue to do poorly all year.

Break pal - Fitness at Your Desk (http://www.breakpal.com). An online workplace wellness application built using drupal and adobe air has been accepted into First Lady Michelle Obama's " Apps for healthy kids competition.

The competition is to inspire application developers to develop utilities or games which inspire kids and adults to eat healthier and develop better exercise habits. Break Pal does both by reminding users to exercise at intervals and then delivers office safe micro-workouts right to the desktop.

Exercises are mostly Qigong, cardio kung fu, and yoga based.

After reviewing 240 sessions submitted for the conference, the track chairs, the Copenhagen team and the Drupal Association are proud to present the DrupalCon Copenhagen program.

The total of 94 sessions is made up of 83 regular sessions, 6 platinum sponsor sessions, 3 keynotes and 2 rounds of lightning talks.

The session selection accounts for many factors including attendee votes, addressing the breadth of interests of DrupalCon attendees, and providing a balanced and compelling program. For example, some sessions were picked because they were essential for introducing new developers to Drupal, other sessions were selected because they present important local Drupal business cases, etc.

If you proposed a session that didn't make it into the program, please consider presenting it at the Unconference on August 23rd or run it as a Birds of a Feather session. We will be adding more information about these options to the website in the coming weeks.

At the Drupal Association retreat in San Francisco, the general assembly set the completion of the drupal.org redesign as its number one priority for 2010. The assembly agreed to fund five contracts to help eliminate obstacles that had prevented the community from completing the redesign.

Five key roles were identified: Architect, Solr developer, Project module developer, and an infrastructure developer. The association also elected to upgrade Drupal.org code repository from CVS to Git to help maintain Drupal.org as the hub of Drupal development.

Job descriptions were developed in conjunction with both the redesign volunteers and the Drupal.org project managers, Kieran Lal, Chris Strahl, and Lisa Rex. The job descriptions were then posted to groups.drupal.org for 3 weeks. Approximately 35 applications were received and a dozen interviews were conducted by the project management team. The contracts were negotiated with Drupal Association Interim General Manager Jacob Redding, to whom the project team reports directly. Contractors work day-to-day with the project management team. The association will pay for the contract work using the funds raised through memberships, advertising, partnerships, affiliates, and DrupalCon sponsorships.

As with many facets of Drupal, and coding in general, there are multiple ways to accomplish the same task. A good exmple of this was with the recent additions to the Lullabot team. The expanded team brought together three skilled developers and an amazing designer each with their own methods of site building. On one side we have Jerad Bitner and myself, who for the past few years have been building sites exclusively with Panels module. On the other side we have James Sansbury and Jared Ponchot who also build beautiful sites using the more recent Context module.

Our first collaboration was the redesign of Lullabot.com, since this project was initially designed and scoped by James and Jared, the decision to use Context module was already in place. I was in no rush to learn Context, when I knew the same result could be achieved with Panels. Lucky for me James and Jared are both excellent resources for answering questions and giving great examples. Now that the project is complete I have a better understanding of Context module. This article is intended to identify the similarities, differences, pros and cons of using each module to build a Drupal website.
